A mixed use scheme inspired by the 'Riviera style' has received planning permission in Torquay, South Devon. The project, designed by architects Kay Elliott, is situated in a prominent, south-facing, coastal location overlooking Tor Bay. It is being developed by Havard Tisdale under Palm Court Torquay Ltd.
The £12 million, 5,500m scheme sits at the centre of Torquay's mile long Promenade with 32 parking spaces. The self-catering provision has been designed to achieve Visit England's five star standard and will form a vital part in revitalising Tor Bay's accommodation portfolio.
Named Abbey Crescent after the nearby Grade I listed monastery, the development will replace the former, fire-damaged, Palm Court Hotel. At Torbay Council's Development Management Committee Meeting on Monday 16th January, Members resolved to grant detailed consent.
Kay Elliott's design has been influenced by the modernist style of early 20th century British seaside architecture. The simple linear form. curved balconies and glass balustrading aim to maximise the expansive sea views and create a contemporary interpretation of the Riviera style'.
Richard Maddock of Kay Elliott, said: "Abbey Crescent will be a landmark building worthy of its historic coastal surroundings and an economic catalyst that will totally transform this longstanding vacant site in one of Britain's best-loved seaside resorts." |
